Dan Hinkley

Dan Hinkley is native to the Zone 4 highlands of Michigan, and has had a lifelong interest in plants which first lead him to receive his B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from Michigan State University and his M.S. in Urban Horticulture from the University of Washington.  In 1987 he established, along with his partner Robert Jones, Heronswood Nursery.  Devoted to introducing rare plants to the gardeners of North America, this endeavor has led him into the wilds of China, South and Central America, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Nepal, Vietnam and many other countries over the past 15 years.  Hinkley writes for many periodicals, including Pacific Horticulture, The American Gardener, Gardens Illustrated and Martha Stewart Living.  He is the author of two popular books, Winter Ornamentals (Sasquatch, 1993) and The Explorers Garden; Rare and Unusual Perennials (Timber Press, 1998).  Hinkley has received many awards for his extensive contributions to horticulture.  Website – www.heronswood.com
